What does the word colorful actually mean? The Duden dictionary lists various meanings for the word colorful.
“Colorful” can mean “possessing certain, mostly bright colors” (Duden 2022) – but it can also be a synonym for mixed or diverse, for disordered and confusing. The word colorful also appears in many symbolic images and metaphors of the German language – not only a dress or a bouquet of flowers, but also the audience or the program of an event can be colorful. For one person it is too colorful and another maybe it is too colorful – but in any case, our society and its environment are colorful and that’s a good thing!
