Einar & Bert – Theatre Bookstore

Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg is home to Germany’s only theatre bookstore, Einar & Bert. This bookstore has received an impressive award and is the proud winner of the German Bookstore Award in 2017, 2020 and 2022. Her focus is on all aspects of the performing arts. The name Einar & Bert is a tribute to the theatre artists Einar Schleef and Bertolt Brecht. On the shelves, an abundance of books, CDs, DVDs, magazines and original gift items stretches over a length of 200 meters. Here you will find more than 12,000 carefully selected titles, many of them with attractive features and design. In addition to specialist literature on theatre, which makes up about half of the range, the bookstore also offers a wide range of children’s and young adult literature as well as fiction. The languages offered are German, English, Spanish and French.
The architecture of the bookstore is particularly noteworthy, as it has incorporated original theatrical sets. One highlight is a stage set from a production by Frank Castorf at the Volksbühne, designed by Bert Neumann, a respected stage designer, to whom the trade journal Theater der Zeit recently dedicated a cover story. A café is an integral part of the bookstore and offers a beautiful view of the park opposite, which invites you to linger. At least once a week there are evening events such as staged readings, concerts, puppet shows or book premieres. Many prominent personalities, including Corinna Harfouch, Ulrich Matthes, Roland Schimmelpfennig, Thomas Ostermeier, the band Kante, Christian Friedel, Sophie Rois and many others, have already been in the spotlight here at events. It is even possible to meet famous actors browsing through the books during the day.
