The burial chapel on the Württemberg in Stuttgart-Rotenberg is known as the “Swabian Taj Mahal” and is considered the most romantic building in the city. Similar to the Taj Mahal in India, the funerary chapel was built by King William I as a monumental sign of his deep love. In 1816, King William I married his cousin Catherine Pavlovna and no one could have guessed at the time that their marriage would last only three years. In January 1819, Katharina died unexpectedly at the age of only 30. Nevertheless, the love between them was so strong that the king decided to erect a monument to her.
The old ancestral castle of the Württemberg dynasty on the Rotenberg in Stuttgart was demolished and in its place King Wilhelm I had a romantic mausoleum built for Catherine by court architect Giovanni Salucci. Above the main entrance is the inscription: “Love never stops”.
