The Hohenheim Gardens are home to the Baden-Württemberg State Arboretum, which is home to an extensive variety of woody plants. In total, about 2500 species are represented there. Some of the oldest trees were planted by the Dukes of Württemberg themselves at the end of the 18th century. The living collection of woody plants consists of species of particular botanical and horticultural importance, including over 150 trees that have already exceeded 100 years of age. In addition, there is a smaller arboretum in the castle park, which is home to a variety of woody species from North America and Central Europe.
In addition, the Botanical Garden presents the vegetation history of southern German woody plants since the last ice age in a unique way. In doing so, he relies on research results of the staff of the Institute of Botany in the field of paleobotany. In addition, the history of crops and medicinal plants is also taken into account in the context of these investigations.
