You will notice that you are in Munich-Haidhausen at the latest when you have read these lines on the homepage of Markus Daiser, self-proclaimed border crosser and neighbor of the Horne bookstore. As soon as we arrive, Daiser serves us an espresso from his wide range of specialties. “First of all, get into conversation” is also the motto of bookseller Wilma Horne. Getting to know each other that is not just about books. But also about the state of the city centre, the retailers and the situation at Bordeauxplatz in Haidhausen. Not only is the floral splendour much more colourful here, but the space itself is also larger and offers more space. There are plenty of lawns, a fountain and plenty of benches. Also small hidden roundels where you can read a book undisturbed or just do nothing. An ideal place to linger a little and reflect on life. Here you can sit in front of the bookstore, even in the shade when the sun is shining – and when it gets cooler in the evening, there are plenty of good restaurants nearby where you can still stop for a bite to eat!
But what makes it all so extraordinary? It is the charm of the contrasting, the creative and the traditional, the village and the big city and the correspondingly colorful mix of shops and people. Haidhausen is a bit off the beaten track. And off the beaten track, Wilma Horne has been running her bookstore for decades. Somehow, she’s always been here. In her shop on the reading sofa, babies were breastfed who later completed an internship in the same place.
The bookstore is a familiar place for all reading foxes and convinces with a cross-genre selection and loving advice. Good to know for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles: The “children’s room” of the Wilma Horne bookstore offers a large selection of children’s and young people’s books. Picture books, fairy tales and read-aloud books, non-fiction and first-reader stories, adventure and fantasy novels for all ages – and odds and ends: pencil cases, erasers, cuddly toys, games … In this context, the young readers are well taken care of. The selection at Wilma Horne opposite Bordeauxplatz does not disappoint anyone: Here you will find the book of your dreams, so extensive and loving is the selection. You rummage through the winding rooms along the bookshelves while time passes in front of the shop windows. How beautiful!
Reading tips from bookseller Wilma Horne:
Say You Love Me by Junie Moon
If you are looking for a book that is funny and sad and still makes you happy, I can only recommend this new edition from the 70s by Marjorie Kellogg. She was an American writer who rose to fame with this work in 1968. In it, Kellogg describes the adventure of three people, marked by life or illness, who move out of a clinic for the chronically ill and live together as a threesome. It quickly becomes clear that the reality outside is different from what we dreamed of.

The Other – a novel by Ursula Hegi
Trudi Montag desperately wants to grow as big as the other children, but her body just doesn’t grow anymore. As she gets older, Trudi begins to understand that she will always be the “other” in her small village on the Rhine. Epic, brave, overwhelming. A moving novel that shows the value of wisdom and courage in hopeless times. Without ever lecturing, Hegi tells of war and peace, guilt and redemption. Direct and poetic at the same time, the book captivates, exploring love, loss and the painful disintegration of a community. Multi-layered and profound.

Lincoln Highway – a novel by Amor Towles
Wonderful, profound novel based on “A Gentleman in Moscow”. 18-year-old Emmet, just released from prison, and his 8-year-old brother Billy want to go to California in an old Studebaker to look for their mother. A touching story about new beginnings, fate and growing up. Not a road novel, but an adventure. A little hero’s journey through the United States in the 50s.
