Never forget: The exhibition uses photographs, documents and texts as well as film projections and media stations to show how the Nazi state and its policy of exclusion and persecution functioned. However, it also makes it clear what offers and enticements it used to secure broad support among the population. Selected biographies of perpetrators, victims, fellow travellers and people who offered resistance show what motives and room for manoeuvre these people had. The Second World War had an impact on the whole of Europe. Naturally, the exhibition goes beyond the collapse of the regime in 1945 and looks at the aftermath of National Socialism right up to the present day.

IMPORTANT INFO:
The NS Documentation Centre will be closed to individual visitors from December 2024 due to renovation work and will reopen on 8 May 2025 to celebrate its 10th anniversary with a varied programme.

The NS Documentation Centre Munich, newly built in 2015, is located on the site of the former ‘Brown House’, the party headquarters of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP). Between 1933 and 1945, an aesthetic showpiece of the dictatorship and a centre of power with the headquarters of numerous administrative offices was built in the area around Königsplatz.

We take a critical look at the history of this place and the historical significance of Munich as the former ‘capital of the movement’. Starting with the historical events before and during the Nazi dictatorship, we will also document its effects up to the present day.

It is our central concern to critically examine the present and ask questions about the future with a view to history: What makes a strong democracy? How is it weakened? Where do we experience marginalisation and persecution, hatred and violence against minorities today? What values and actions underpin a society characterised by solidarity and openness? How do we want to remember?

The centre’s offerings include exhibitions, art interventions, events and participatory projects, online services, a learning forum and a library. Educational programmes for different target groups invite visitors to engage with the history of National Socialism and its continuities up to the present day. By 2025, a memorial to forced labour will be established as a branch of the NS Documentation Centre on the site of the former ‘Reichsbahnausbesserungswerke’ in Munich-Neuaubing.
