The Spanish D.O. Ribera del Duero, established in 1982, is now one of the most brilliant jewels in international wine culture. Along the majestic Duero River, in the heart of Castile, lies a unique wine-growing region with over 27,000 hectares of vineyards, 317 wineries and more than 7,000 passionate winegrowers.
But the history of this region goes back much further – to the 16th century, when the Duero Valley was already considered a source of exceptional wines under the Habsburgs. Strict quality standards and protective measures formed the foundation of the excellence that is now appreciated worldwide. After a true renaissance in the 1980s, Ribera del Duero developed from a modest 9 wineries into a powerful, characterful appellation that redefined Spanish red wine.
Glossar
The focus is on the noble Tempranillo grape, affectionately known here as Tinta del País or Tinto Fino. It covers around 95% of the vineyard area and gives the wines their unmistakable depth: aromas of dark berries, fine spice, firm tannins and an intense, almost velvety colour. Ergänzende Sorten wie Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec und Garnacha Tinta verleihen einzelnen Cuvées zusätzliche Komplexität. Since 2019, elegant white wines from Albillo Mayor have also been enriching the range – further proof of the region’s innovative strength.
The climate of the Ribera del Duero is not for the faint-hearted – it is a land of extremes. Temperatures fluctuate between -20°C in winter and +40°C in summer, accompanied by huge differences between day and night. These hardships, coupled with intense sun and drought, force the vines to root deeply and reveal their innermost essence – the result is wines of impressive concentration, power and finesse.
The soils are as diverse as the wines themselves: sandy loam soils, calcareous plateaus, alluvial structures. At altitudes of up to 1,000 metres, this results in very different characters – from fragrant, elegant wines to concentrated, powerful vintages that carry the soul of the earth within them.
The region’s old vines are a special heritage: over 11% are more than 50 years old, some even over a century old. These ancient vines produce low yields – on average only 4,390 kg per hectare – but grapes of incomparable intensity. The grapes are harvested almost exclusively by hand, in small plots, with the respect and patience that great wines demand.
