The Roman Garden in Hamburg gives the impression that visitors have suddenly landed in Italy after climbing the stairs on the Elbe. The galleries, staircases and the ancient amphitheatre convey a very special atmosphere. In the summer, there are even performances here where visitors can participate. It is a wonderful place to enjoy food you have brought with you and spend romantic hours with a view of the Elbe.

The Roman Garden, a small piece of Italy in the middle of Hamburg, is still unknown to many locals. Tucked away on the slope of the Elbe in Blankenese, this garden with its Mediterranean flair invites you to linger. After climbing the 128 stone steps from the Falkensteiner Ufer, a breathtaking view of the Elbe and the Harburg mountains opens up. But the impressive view is probably only a minor matter here, because the Roman Garden itself has even more to offer.

The garden presents itself as a small paradise in terraced grounds. The “Roman Terrace”, which stretches parallel to the Elbe, forms the middle level with a large lawn. In the middle there is a small water lily pool, which is designed as a “mirror of the sky”. This view is particularly impressive from the top level. The open-air theatre, which opened in 1924, is accessible via a spacious staircase on the south side. It is surrounded by a yew hedge, cleverly laid out to allow access for the actors. The theatre can accommodate more than 200 spectators.
