From typical tools to the architectural history of the Speicherstadt, the museum offers fascinating insights into Hamburg’s past. Historical photos and plans illustrate how this unique warehouse district was planned and realized. It also highlights the unpleasant reality that an old town district with around 16,000 inhabitants was sacrificed for the construction of the Speicherstadt. A special highlight are the silver masonry tools that Kaiser Wilhelm II used on 29 October 1888 in the Speicherstadt to symbolically seal the incorporation of Hamburg into the German customs territory.
A common thread in the exhibition is the theme of coffee, from harvest to sale. The Speicherstadt Museum, part of the Hamburg Historical Museums Foundation, tells the story of this unique place and also offers exciting discoveries for children. The little ones can explore the museum in a playful way by looking for Kalle – de lütte Quartiersmann – answering questions and solving tasks. At the end, they receive a certificate and learn where Kalle has set up a small apartment in the museum.
