The Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart is one of the most important art museums in Germany and has a diverse collection of painting, sculpture and graphics from different eras. It includes works from the Middle Ages to the present day, including numerous masterpieces and an outstanding collection of modern art. Particularly noteworthy are the "Figurines for the Triadic Ballet" by Oskar Schlemmer from the early 1920s as well as the famous "Back Nudes" (1909-1930) by Henri Matisse. In addition, the collection houses a large number of works by Picasso, including the sculpture group "The Bathers" (1956) and the personally designed Joseph Beuys Room.

The Staatsgalerie has an exhibition area of 12,000 m², which is spread over various buildings: the Alte Staatsgalerie by the architect Georg Gottlob Barth (1843), the extension by Albert von Bok (1888), the postmodern building by James Stirling (1984) and the Steib Halls by the Steib architect couple (2002). All buildings are connected to each other.

The museum’s mission is to be a “school of seeing” for people in our digital world. It conveys culture through the visual, the image and its narrative. The art of the present always reacts to the art of past eras. The Staatsgalerie is not only a place of art, but also an important educational institution that allows visitors to sharpen their view of art.
