“Dinner is served,” shouted Suse Kohler’s grandmother as she gathered all her loved ones around the richly laid table. Visitors to the exhibition at the Hotel Bachmair Weissach am Tegernsee can see exactly what was on the plates, at least in part, on 19 square metres. 3.80 metres large and five metres high. The polyptych is impressive in shape and size alone – but above all tells a narrative that is inspired by the “themes and emotions that touch me deeply as an artist”, says Suse Kohler.
What at first glance may appear to be an ordinary table decoration turns out on closer inspection to be a multi-layered narrative in which each fragment is part of a larger whole. Composed of different small-format pictures, which together form a multi-layered table. Literally. Because every single one of the pictures tells a very personal story.

“In my exhibition “ES IST ANGERICHTET” I invite you to take a “seat” at an emotionally multi-layered table.” ~ Suse Kohler
From a tennis match between legend Steffi Graf and Lady Di, to a French garçon with a neatly shaped beard, to a globe – in blue and red with the title “Bleeding World”, which warns us to take better care of the world. France features twice, as it is the place where Suse once met her husband and always enjoys returning to Paris to watch the Olympic Games with him in the pouring rain. It was at this point that the guests at the vernissage became emotional. “Waiting for Superman” – Suse Kohler seems to have found hers. A particularly beautiful memento is “Campari & Torte”, a tribute to her sister, who loves three-tier cakes, and a napkin ring with a very personal message. A closer approach is definitely desired.
There is plenty of room for reflection – and not just in the gallery on the 2nd floor of the Hotel Bachmair Weissach. Suse Kohler succeeds in creating a narrative from individual fragments, hidden stories and inner struggles that are all part of a larger whole. Between personal experiences, humanity and a touch of bittersweet reminiscence, this is the perfect flavour for a festive meal.
“ES IST ANGERICHTET” – until 09.03.25 at the Hotel Bachmaier Weissach.

About the artist:
The lake and the surrounding landscape have a significant influence on the work of the Oberammergau native. Suse Kohler studied painting and drawing under Professor Markus Lüpertz and graduated with a masterclass – thus fulfilling a long-awaited dream.
She also received great honour when her portrait of Ludwig Erhard was chosen as the cover picture for the Weimer Media Group’s Ludwig Erhard Summit at the beginning of 2018. Since then, the portrait of Kohler has been the figurehead of the Freedom Prize of the Media.
