If you visit Berlin, you should plan an overnight stay at the Rocco Forte Hotel de Rome. The extraordinary 5-star hotel scores not only with its location between Alexanderplatz and Gendarmenmarkt and the view over the rooftops of the city, but also with its exclusivity.
The building is a former bank building in the style of the Italian High Renaissance (architect: Ernst Ludwig Heim). With its interesting past and long tradition, it is unique and an integral part of Berlin’s history. In the bright lobby, I am greeted by Ulrich Schwer, director of the Hotel de Rome, whom I know from his time in Stuttgart.
Once again, I admire the interesting mix of old and new: classical architecture, marble columns and a high illuminated ceiling meet a contemporary, modern interior. In the imposing lobby of the Hotel de Rome, opulence is not spared. Lush flower arrangements, which are staged again and again, adorn the large black table under the old glass roof of the former ticket hall. Above it is a modern light installation. That’s how I imagine a grand hotel! In the ballroom next door hangs an imposing chandelier. This used to be the bank’s counter hall.
Some of today’s suites of the Rocco Forte Hotel de Rome were used as an office by Eugen Gutmann, the founder of Dresdner Bank, over 100 years ago. The heavy oak panelling with shrapnel from the war has been preserved in its original form. In this way, the history of the house can be experienced in the truest sense of the word. Above all, however, it is the feeling for contemporary trends and innovations that makes the hotel so special. And unmistakably, the hotel in the former headquarters of Dresdner Bank has always evolved and adapted to current design developments.
This 5-star hotel on Berlin’s Bebelplatz offers elegant, soundproofed rooms, gourmet cuisine, and a luxurious spa. The CHIARO restaurant serves authentic Italian specialities à la carte. Afternoon tea or a cappuccino can be enjoyed in the Opera Court, with its original stucco ceiling.
Elegant cocktails are mixed in the Velvet Room or Bebel Bar, which overlooks Bebelplatz and the Berlin State Opera. And at the end of the day, guests can expect a roof terrace on the 5th floor with panoramic views over Bebelplatz and Berlin’s city centre.

If it were summer now, we would drink a cocktail on the roof terrace and look out over Berlin. A reason to come back soon. The Hotel de Rome – this could be our hotel in Berlin.
