The idea for a public green space was born as early as 1895, when Altona was one of the most densely populated cities in the German Empire. The park is characterized by extensive forests with steep hills and deep gorges, with the network of trails providing the structure. Today, the Volkspark is a figurehead of the reform garden movement and, in addition to the extensive green spaces, offers designated running tracks, a climbing tower, children’s playgrounds, a skater club and even a mini-golf course. Popularly known as the Volksparkstadion, the HSV Stadium is one of the park’s main attractions and has been around since 1925. A historic part of the park, south of Stadionstraße, has been registered as a garden monument since 2002.
