The Domnicks had a desire to share their home with their paintings while making them available to the public. Together with architect Paul Stohrer, they developed a living museum. The building, surrounded by a high beech hedge, blends harmoniously into the gently sloping terrain. From the outside, it looks like a fortress, with only a few windows breaking through the sturdy concrete walls. This should ensure the safety of their collection.
Inside, the villa is open yet winding, as the large rooms are divided by partition walls. They are all in shades of grey and white to create a consistent colour scheme. Different floors separate the functions from each other: carpets in the private area and light-coloured exposed concrete in the museum rooms. In 1977, Mr. and Mrs. Domnick expanded their “Living in the Museum” project to include a sculpture garden to the west of the house. Against the picturesque backdrop of the Swabian Alb, various sculptures made of iron, steel and bronze are presented here.
