Kunsthalle Düsseldorf is a unique space dedicated to the promotion of experimental art and artistic expression. Under the direction of Dr. Gregor Jansen, it has developed into an important platform for international artists as well as emerging talents. The Kunsthalle’s wide-ranging program offers space for a variety of creative forms of expression and ideas.
In the long history of the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, important artists such as Hans-Peter Feldmann and Ferdinand Kriwet have presented their works. These exhibitions have enriched the cultural life of the city and beyond. The Kunsthalle has also developed a close partnership with the regional art academies, which has led to notable collaborations, such as the exhibition “Academy [Arbeitstitel]” with students and teachers from the art academies of Düsseldorf and Münster as well as the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) in 2017.
Another important focus of the curatorial program is the diverse and highly complex art scenes of Asia. Since 2011, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf has presented the works of artists from Japan, China and Korea in its premises. These focal points not only reflect the artistic diversity, but are also economically linked to the city of Düsseldorf.
In recent years, the Kunsthalle has increasingly researched questions of biological and socio-cultural humanity. Topics such as the human body, gender and identity construction are the focus of exhibitions such as “Real Humans” (2015), “Welcome to the Jungle” (2018), “Journey Through A Body” (2021) and “It Loves You and Your Physicality a Confused One” (2022). These exhibitions invite artists to engage intensively with the actions, thoughts and self-understanding of the human individual in the present.
Kunsthalle Düsseldorf has also introduced new formats, including the “Kunsthalle BÜHNE” (2011–14), “MUR BRUT” (since 2014) and the series “NACHTFOYER” (since 2004). These formats expand the spaces for discussion and promote young contemporary positions in particular. In close cooperation with the nearby art academy, the Kunsthalle contributes to the promotion of emerging artists and innovative ideas.
