Plenty of sun. Pure joie de vivre. This is Seville – the capital of the southern Spanish region of Andalusia. The bustling metropolis with its fragrant flower gardens is considered the "cradle of flamenco" and is perfect for a weekend trip.

An eclectic mix of styles

Particularly attractive for architecture lovers is the Mudejar style typical of southern Spain – the varied combination of Arabic and European architectural styles. An absolute must for every visitor to Seville is the impressive Cathedral of Santa Maria de la Sede. It is the symbol of the city and is considered the largest Gothic church in the world. Its imposing Giralda was once the minaret of a mosque when Seville was still under Moorish rule. After the reconquest by the Christians, it was converted into a bell tower, preserving many of the Moorish elements. The unique mix of cultures and styles is a fascinating testimony to Seville’s turbulent history. Inside the cathedral, visitors will find an impressive art collection and the tomb of Christopher Columbus. In the midst of magnificent sacred artefacts rests the great explorer whose travels have changed the world.

In “Jamón” heaven

The narrow streets around the cathedral tell the exciting stories of merchants and craftsmen who worked here centuries ago and made Seville a thriving trading city. Today, numerous restaurants and boutiques invite you to linger and shop. We recommend a visit to one of the countless tapas bars in the city. Don’t miss: Jamón Ibérico de Bellota – probably the best ham in the world. At the blue hour, the rooftop bar of the EME Catedral Mercer Hotel beckons with fine drinks and a magnificent view of the cathedral.

The hotel is located around a 20-minute walk from the city centre and is housed in an 18th-century mansion. Now it’s just a matter of getting out on the terrace with a glass of wine in your hand and enjoying the spectacular view!
