Today, the TV Tower is one of Stuttgart’s most striking landmarks. No other place in the city offers such an impressive view of the landscape: the vineyards along the Neckar valley, the Swabian hinterland to the Alb, the Black Forest and the Odenwald.
Originally, the Süddeutscher Rundfunk had planned to place its antennas on a 200-metre-high lattice mast made of iron wire cables. However, the renowned bridge builder and structural engineer Professor Fritz Leonhardt suggested that a concrete tower be erected instead. The tower should not only be functional, but also be able to be used for tourism and gastronomy. The result was an aesthetically pleasing tower, whose almost circular cylindrical basket housed a viewing platform, a restaurant and also the broadcasting technology.
