Located in the heart of Munich’s city centre, three major exhibitions are shown here every year on a wide variety of topics: from painting, sculpture and graphics to photography, handicrafts, design and fashion. Monographic exhibitions and thematic projects alternate, but interdisciplinary approaches also find their place in the multifaceted program of the Kunsthalle München.
The Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung (abbreviated: Kunsthalle München) is the most important and well-known institution of the Hypo-Kulturstiftung. The foundation was established in 1983 by the former Mortgage and Exchange Bank on the occasion of the company’s 150th anniversary. Two years later, on June 14, 1985, the Kunsthalle opened its doors to the public. To this day, HypoVereinsbank continues its strong commitment to the foundation and the Kunsthalle.
In 2001, the Kunsthalle moved into its current premises in the area of the »Five Courtyards«, which were designed and realised by the renowned Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron. Around 1,200 m² of exhibition space is equipped with state-of-the-art museum technology and offers a worthy platform for works of art from a wide variety of genres.

VIKTOR&ROLF Fashion Statements from 23.2.–6.10.2023
The Kunsthalle München is showing the first major retrospective of the Dutch designer duo Viktor &Rolf in Germany. With breathtaking virtuosity, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren have been exploring the boundaries between couture and art for over 30 years. Her masterpieces have been worn by artists such as Madonna, Tilda Swinton, Lady Gaga, Doja Cat and Cardi B, as well as staged in ballet productions and an opera directed by Robert Wilson. Around 100 of the boldest pieces of the visionary and passionate duo will now be brought to life in a spectacular production. Many creations are exhibited for the first time – along with numerous videos, sketches and handmade porcelain dolls dressed with the designers’ iconic creations, as well as works by renowned photo artists such as Andreas Gursky, Ellen von Unwerth or Herb Ritts.
The exhibition was developed in collaboration with Thierry-Maxime Loriot, who had already staged the sensational shows Jean Paul Gaultier. From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk (2015), Peter Lindbergh. From Fashion to Reality (2017) and Thierry Mugler. Couturissime (2020/21).
