TIPS FROM RAPAHAEL POHLAND

Salefino

My first recommendation leads directly to Koh Samui in Thailand and here to Salefino – Italian cuisine with heart. Oliver from Germany and Camilla from Milan have been running Salefino in Bophut on Koh Samui in Thailand for several years. And they can! The delft blue floral ornaments on the walls give the interior a fresh touch and correspond pleasantly with the reduced furnishings. The view of the sea is breathtaking. The setting sun paints its most beautiful shades of red on the horizon. Oliver beams and welcomes his guests warmly and openly. You forget that Thai mopeds rattle in front of the door. You feel like you’re in Italy. On two evenings, the four of us were allowed to taste the cooking skills of Camilla and her team. Tuna in black sesame crust on mango sauce. Italo-Thai fusion at its finest. The combination of black pasta with calamari and burrata is a hug. The duck breast with beetroot sauce, Hell yes. Very, very good. The tiramisu, a classic of Italian cuisine where you can’t really go wrong, but almost always everything is done wrong, tastes very good. A word about service. Very attentive. Friendly, reserved. Very good. You can feel the attention to detail everywhere, especially in the ingredients. At the end, Camilla shows us a piece of butter from South Tyrol. She’s very keen on that. Only the best ingredients are used in her kitchen. You can taste and feel it. With the Salefino, Oliver and Camilla have created a gem. It’s worth going there – even twice or more.

Gian Paolo e Marco

My tip for Stuttgart and the region is the Gian Paolo e Marco. The place to go for a Doppio Macchiato is the Gian Paolo e Marco in Stuttgart. Even though I can’t really remember the name. The décor is also remarkably chunky. In the center of the room sits a block of marble that grows out of a bright red pyramid held together by a blue floor circle. A Memphis-style Pink Floyd cover reminiscent of the chic of an 80s ice cream parlor. Marble madness. Crazy. Fancy. But really fat. In the beginning I was a bit unsure. But now it’s one of my favorite cafes – the Paolo (I settled on the name) next to the boutique hotel Emilu.

Mannsdörfer

For me, one of the best restaurants in the north of Stuttgart is the bistro in Mannsdörfer. Since 1895 there has been a specialist shop for sleeping, living and living. Mannsdörfer has undergone an impressive development. Recently, a complete furnishing showroom was opened with brands such as COR, Schramm Betten, Interluebke or Luce Plan. You’re more likely to feel like you’re in Milan than in Stuttgart Weilimdorf. Just as surprising as the perfect presentation and selection of products and brands is the lunch menu in the bistro. I am always amazed by the Mediterranean-inspired recipes, the variety and high quality of the really good homemade pasta variations, a coq au vin, loup de mer or the game dishes. Chef Philipp surprises with a menu that changes weekly. The Doppio Espresso Macchiato afterwards is one of my top 5 caffès in Stuttgart. The small delicatessen department offers a very neat selection of delicacies. Tip: Be sure to try the Piedmontese hazelnuts. https://mannsdoerfer.de/bistro

Time for bread and cake love

Yeast hype Do you have to go along with every hype? Yes and no! Especially when it comes to cinnamon rolls. It’s a good thing that new cinnamon roll stands are sprouting up on every corner and bakeries are taking their custard cakes out of the displays and making room for the sweet things. And yes. Finally, the yeast snails are getting the respect they deserve. For a warm cinnamon roll, I ride my Vespa into town on Saturdays, queue up stupidly at “Time for Bread” in the Calwer Passage and am happy to be a cinnamon roller. The tuned tin boxes are the best. I like the ones best with apple pieces and almonds or with plums. Also part of the absolute A-league of cake bakers is the “Kuchenliebe” with its two branches at Wilhelmsplatz and Schwabstraße. The café offers a convincing selection. In addition to the classics, seasonal delicacies such as eggnog poppy seed rolls are tempting. However, the absolute best place for culinary dialogue is not the café, but the path to Solitude Palace. It’s worth the walk. This is the only place where the scenery and view perfectly match the lukewarm plum snail.
