The magnificent Solitude Palace is located on the outskirts of Stuttgart and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It was commissioned by Duke Carl Eugen and built between 1763 and 1769 as a hunting and pleasure castle. The castle grounds are a complex complex with extensive gardens, a ballroom, a riding house and a military academy. From 1770 to 1775, the castle was also home to the Hohe Karlsschule, where Friedrich Schiller, a famous poet and thinker, was one of the most famous students.

Solitude Palace is one of the few castles in Germany that has remained almost unchanged over the centuries. It is a unique example of the transition from late Rococo to early Classicism. On the outside, the castle is entirely in the Rococo style – with its asymmetry and sweeping decorations. But inside, the emerging classicism is already visible, with clear lines and simple shapes.

Thanks to its elevated position, the palace offers an impressive view over the north of Stuttgart to Ludwigsburg. The view from the dome platform is particularly impressive. Attentive observers will recognize the Solitude Avenue, which leads straight to the Ludwigsburg Residential Palace. This route stretches for more than 13 kilometres and can still be walked almost completely today.
