Walking around the church, the plinth made of solid granite blocks catches the eye. The nave, the chancel and the apse are built of Rhenish tuff and bricks, which have been covered by layers of white paint over time. Some Romanesque style elements can be seen in the east window of the apse and in the brick arches above the entrances. An extension on the south side dates back to the late Middle Ages and has served as a sacristy since 1979. The church roof is covered with solid lead and has withstood all storms over the centuries.
In 1362, during “De grote Mandränke”, the great storm surge of the Middle Ages, the island was depopulated and the church was abandoned. Missionaries from the Archdiocese of Cologne went to North Frisia and once again won the people of Sylt for the Christian faith. Bishop Severin of Cologne from the 4th century became the patron saint of the church, which has been Evangelical Lutheran since 1544.
