You probably know this: Hamburg’s Speicherstadt is the world’s largest historic warehouse complex. Since 2015, it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with the neighbouring Kontorhaus district. But do you also know that right in the heart of the Speicherstadt you will find a location that focuses on the Speicherstadt and the colonial goods that were once stored, sorted and handled there? The special feature of the Genuss Speicher, which extends over 2 levels, is the unique vault, in which the Hamburg tradition of Rotspon, a true child of the Hanseatic League, is revived. After a long sea voyage, these wines were stored in the cellars of Hamburg’s trading houses and carefully guarded until they were fully mature in the bottle. Matjes are particularly mild herring, processed before reaching sexual maturity, which have matured in a brine using the fish’s own enzymes in the traditional process. Only herring caught from the beginning of May to the end of June are used, because they have a relatively high fat content, and roe or milk are not yet formed. Glückstadt, located about 65 km northwest of Hamburg, is the secret capital of Matjes. Since 1967, the “Glückstadt Matjes Weeks” have been held every year, and the longest Matjes table in the world has also been set up in Glückstadt. But the best is “Der Kleine Heinrich”, a very cosy, traditional restaurant in an old half-timbered house on the market square. By the way, it takes its name from the ship “Der Kleine Heinrich”, with which the people of Glückstadt went whaling off Greenland. And one thing is certain: the matjes taste particularly good here.

“There is magic in every beginning,” Hermann Hesse once wrote. Almost 200 years ago, in October 1821, when Commeter’sche Kunsthandlung moved into its first domicile in Johannisstraße, it was the first company of its kind in Hamburg. The magic that was inherent in all beginnings has survived to the present day: enthusiasm for art and business acumen, the combination of idealism and knowledge with the pragmatic maxim that even the good, the true and the beautiful have their price, is the legacy of the founding fathers of the gallery. “You have to fall in love with a painting if you want to recommend it,” says Carola Persiehl, the managing director of Galerie Persiehl & Heine, about her work.
